The Central Iowa Wind Ensemble opens the 2019-2020 concert season with a program titled ‘Song and Dance.’  Conductor Mark Doerffel leads the ensemble on a musical journey with selections that will sweep you off your feet.  Euphonium soloist Vince Kenney will amaze the audience with his technical virtuosity in Philip Sparke’s Harlequin.  The Ensemble welcomes special guest conductor Jay Nugent for Sousa’s New York Hippodrome and Andrew Boysen’s Song for Lyndsay.  From ballet to waltz, this upbeat concert will surely get your toes tapping!

Children’s Concert: Heroes

The Central Iowa Wind Ensemble concludes their season with the popular Children’s Concert Series. Conduct the band, sing along or march with us! This concert is full of music for children of all ages including the “young at heart”. We will recognize this year’s winner of the Aimee Krug Memorial Student Solo Competition, Elizabeth Hertzberg, as she performs her flute solo with the ensemble. CIWE members Ryan Rowley and Joseph Thering will direct the group for singalongs to The Greatest Showman and Mary Poppins. The trumpet section will take us on an adventure with Bugler’s Holiday. We will honor local heroes in our community with a fitting march conducted by Des Moines Fire Chief, John TeKippe. You will also have a chance after the concert to see a fire truck up close and talk with our fire heroes. This courageous concert will surely inspire young music lovers and older ones alike!

Be sure to show up early at 2:15 pm to enjoy a Q&A session with our interim conductor, Mark Doerffel.

Celebrating Women’s History Month

The ensemble continues its cultural diversity series with a tribute to women’s history month. This concert will feature music written by female composers including three written by native Iowans as well as pieces inspired by events in women’s history.

Special Guests:
Jillian Whitaker – graduate of Urbandale HS and UNI, returns to Des Moines to speak with a number of metro school bands about her current career in Los Angeles as a film composer. She will also be on hand for the pre-concert lecture to give further history about her piece, Coming Home.

Linda Robbins Coleman – Des Moines local, former resident composer for Drake University Theatre, and internationally performed composer of symphonic and chamber music will be premiering the wind band version of her piece, Nolens Volens. She will also be available before the concert for our Q&A session.

From A to Z: Aladdin to Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, we will have a medley of tunes for all generations.  We will be joined by a couple special princesses from Little Princess Parties to MC the concert and sing “Let It Go”. In the spirit of Halloween, we also welcome you to come in costume if you like: as a princess, pirate, or anything else.
